It is one of the most important and ancient monasteries in Ladakh. It is one of the oldest Tibetan monasteries, which were built using wood. The monastery is also known by the name of Shey Gompa and is built in a beautiful location. It was established by Tsongon Chogyal Phagpa, who was a Lama and an astrologer as well. He had great knowledge about astrology and architecture. The Shey Monastery has many old artifacts, which are very famous among tourists. One can also see beautiful carvings on rocks and the sculptures which are formed really beautifully.

The monastery has a very good architecture and one can see that the people who were living here in the past had great knowledge about architecture. The monastery is full of paintings, which are considered as the best in Ladakh region. You will find various types of animals, fruits and flowers which all have their own importance. The paintings show various scenes like love affairs, wars, battles and many more.
The monastery is located very close to the Tso Moriri Lake and offers a lot of peace and tranquility. One can sit in the garden and enjoy nature without any disturbance. Parking is also provided for visitors and there are many places for sitting as well. The monastery is just about 2km away from Shey village, which is a beautiful place as well. There are several hotels located in this village, which are also famous among tourists all over the world.
