About Mount Abu

Mount Abu is a hill station and a municipal committee in Rajasthan state in India. It is located near the state’s western border with Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Mount Abu is famous for its terraced farming and tree-covered hills. It is also known for its architectural heritage, including the Stepwell that takes people to an underground water source with steps embedded in stone. The UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 1984.

1) Nakki Lake

Nakki Lake is located in the middle of the Mains valley on a natural plateau. It is known as the centre of tourism in Mount Abu and other villages around it, and has a great number of hotels and guest houses.
It was built by the British during their rule of Rajasthan (1846-1947). The lake has a strong central island with an area of one acre (0.4 ha) and surrounded by an embankment 3 km long with a width of 8 km.

2) Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary

Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary is a place you need to visit if you want to observe wildlife in its purest form. Its location is a little way off the main road, but it is worth the journey. You will be amazed by the sight of tigers, elephants and birds of prey.

3) Toad Rock View Point

This high point is located at a distance of 2 km from the town centre, and is just adjacent to the Bhatia Sagar Dam. This place offers amazing views of the surrounding hills and valley. There are many vantage points all around, but only Toad Rock View Point provides panoramic views all round. It is a good place to enjoy sunrises, sunsets and moonlight.

4) Guru Shikhar

Guru Shikhar is located in a range of hills and peaks known as ‘Hill of the Guru’ which is about 20 km from Mount Abu. It is at a height of 2,208 feet (674 meters) above sea level. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva here and it remains open for devotees under all weather conditions. The spectacular view of the town from this place makes it worth climbing up to the top.

5) Dilwara Jain temples

The Dilwara temples in Mount Abu are some of the most spectacular Jain temples in India. Their intricate marble work has been compared to classic Italian and Greek architecture. The stepwells at Mount Abu were built more than 1,000 years ago and are known as the “Wonder of India”. They were built from large stone blocks without any mortar to hold them in place.

6) Peace Park

Peace Park is an open space (open green) in the centre of the town where people can relax and unwind. It is a peaceful atmosphere that is set aside to accommodate people who just want to be alone or meet friends. The park, with its wide range of trees and fountains, has hosted many cultural events, including the annual “Bollywood Night” street party.

7) Trevors Tank

Trevors Tank is located at a height of 3,180 feet (968 metres) above sea level at the foothills of Aravalli mountain range on the banks of Muri River. The tank is named after Major Cecil Trevors, an officer in the British army who was stationed in the area. The tank irrigates over 4,000 acres of land and supplies a water supply to adjoining villages. Trevors Tank is also a popular picnic spot for the locals, where they can enjoy the serene beauty all around.

8) Lal Mandir

‘Lal Mandir’ is a famous temple of Lord Shiva in Mount Abu. The temple is situated in the heart of the town and makes for an excellent landmark to orientate oneself when travelling around. The relief work on the walls of the temple gives a distinct impression of the glory and grandeur of Mount Abu in all its opulence.

9) Achalgarh Fort

Achalgarh Fort – located in the north of Mount Abu, this is the second largest fort in Rajasthan. The fort rises above a small plateau. This two-storeyed fort houses a collection of ancient weapons like cannons and an armoury where you can see swords, shields, guns and spears used by different rulers during different eras.

10) The Achleshwar Mahadev temple

The Achleshwar Mahadev temple is a stepwell temple in Mount Abu, which is situated near the Lal Mandir, a famous Hindu temple in Mount Abu. The Achleshwara Mahadev temple is famous for its architecture and beauty. There are small shops on both sides of it which offer different products from food to toys and souvenirs.
