9) Chapora Fort

Located in Chapora, 10km away from the capital city Panaji, the fort is one of Goa’s prime attractions (next only to beaches). Built two centuries before Portuguese arrived in India, Chapora Fort still retains its original form. In the old days, it was a halting point for many caravans passing by. Today it is a perfect example of local culture and architecture that offers an insight into the history and society of this coastal state.

10) Fort Aguada

Exuding some of the best examples of Portuguese architecture, Fort Aguada is located just on the outskirts of the city. It was built in 1612 as a watch-tower to safeguard Vasco da Gama’s ships that used to travel in from Europe. A few years later, the Portuguese adapted it into a military garrison. Today, it stands as an example of Goa’s rich architectural heritage and is one of its prime attractions.

11)  Reis Magos Fort

Situated in the picturesque town of Colva, this fortress is one of Goa’s biggest attractions. It was built after 1630 as a watch-tower to guard the area against Maratha pirates during their invasion. Soon, Fort Aguada caught the interest of the Portuguese and became a part of it. The fort was added to in 1672 to form a complete fortress and its impressive architecture still endures today.

Also known as the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, this is a good example of Portuguese colonial architecture. This massive cathedral was built in 1668 and was built to be a bastion against the constant threat of raids by pirates during the 17th century.

14) The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception

One of the oldest churches in Goa, this church is also one of the most beautiful examples of Portuguese Colonial architecture. The church was built after 1666 and forms part of the Basilica complex in Old Goa.
